Simplicity – The Gift of the Essentials
Once we begin to shift into a state of Gratitude, Simplicity – the gift of the essentials – begins to take shape in our minds, our souls, our lives.
Getting Back to Basics
Deep within all of us is a need to create a life that is simple and straightforward, honest and true. This naturally happens once we live in daily gratitude. Our eyes are opened and we can better discern what we not only need, but what we deeply desire. We are refreshed and renewed because we choose to see the simplicity all around us. Now that we have a deep appreciation for what we have, we have a clearer picture of where to focus our energy.
SIMPLE PLEASURES
Simple pleasures such as setting the table with care, fresh fruit and veggies, or a hot cup of coffee or tea with a friend become part of our daily lives. We find inspiration and creativity all around us. We slow down and savor the way the light filters through the clouds. We relish the feeling of slipping into warm, clean sheets fresh from the dryer. Chaos becomes calm. Focus displaces frazzled. Simplicity-the gift of the essentials-reigns supreme.
JOYFUL SIMPLICITIES
Once we choose simplicity, its gifts pour out to us, if we are open to receiving them. Sarah encourages us each month to look ahead for ways we can intentionally focus on the “joyful simplicities” this life offers. What are some ways you can begin to slow down and savor? Here is a list of my favorite ways during the winter months:
- Homemade soup – I do this at least once a week. Sometimes it’s a simple chicken noodle, other weeks, I get more adventurous and try a new recipe. The Resources tab offers seasonal recipes that have become favorites in our house.
- Organize one drawer or counter at time. Take your time here and empty it all out so you can pare down to what you really need. I promise, you don’t actually need 27 black pens that don’t write well, or that receipt from 5 years ago. You know, the one you’re holding onto “just in case”.
- Create a coffee/tea/hot cocoa bar. I’ve done this for the past 6 years and it is now a must-have in my kitchen. Makes those cold days a bit more bearable when a hot drink is just minutes away.
- Write a kind note to a friend and mail it. With an envelope and stamps. Doesn’t everyone love to get encouraging mail?
- Eat by candlelight. I’ve even been known to only use candlelight during the day when I need to deep reset.
- Wear perfume. Every day. You deserve to smell beautiful.
- Take a hot bath. This is a must in my life. I take at least one each week.
